The Codex 16: What will be

The Apple is more than a catalog of that which precedes us. Within its twisting, sparking innards I've caught glimpses of what will be. Such a thing should not be possible. Perhaps it isn't. Maybe it is simply a suggestion. How to know? How to be sure?

I contemplate the consequences of these visions: are they images of things to come – or simply the potential for what might be. Can we influence the outcome? Dare we try? And in so doing, do we merely ensure that which we've seen?

I am torn – as always – between action and inaction – unclear as to which – if either – will make a difference. Am I even meant to make a difference? Still, I keep this journal. Is that not an attempt to change – or perhaps guarantee – what I have seen?

Commentary: Again, Altair is filled with doubt as he attempts to understand what is beyond his understanding. The Apple seems to have the power to predict the future. Or perhaps create a suggestion of the future. How does this work? Some, amazing power to calculate the odds? If that were the case then how powerful would a machine have to be? What does that say about the Those who came before and their capabilities? If they could predict the future, how did they not see their end? Or did they see it and simply accept it? Is there any point in trying to understand what is beyond our comprehension?
Personally, I have a theory regarding the Pieces of Eden. I know they can be used to control people by another person. But if that is the case, what about the user? Can the pieces of Eden not be used to control the "controller?" What if all those times throughout history where the Pieces of Eden influenced history, those were actually times where the Pieces of Eden were controlling the users who themselves thought they were in control of the will of mankind. The Pieces of Eden could have been pre-programmed with directives while the first civ was still around or even could have a consciousness themselves and are making active decisions on the course of history. If this is the case, it explains some of the unusual behavior of the PEs. The time when Al Mualim allowed the Apple to slip from his grasp, the time after; when Altair is somehow dissuaded by the phantom of Al Mualim to destroy the Apple and when it began to show the locations of the other PEs, without any input. Also, its spontaneous malfunction at Denver International Airport.
It is quite possible the PEs are the ones that are really in control, that the Templars themselves are just tools.
But, we'll never know if that is the case, because Des and his team are gone. Nevertheless, its good to come up with theories as it is not like we are going to get anything of substance out of the current holders of the Assassin's creed copyright.
